Gluten-Free Bisquick Now Available

This weekend I was up visiting my sister in CT and did some shopping at her local Xpect Discount. It is kind of a mess of a store, but they usually have some good gluten-free items. This was the first time I saw Gluten-Free Bisquick so I picked up two boxes, one for each of us. Then, when I got home that night I had a Bisquick® Gluten Free care package from MyBlogSpark. I am excited to try the new product. I am thinking of making a Chicken and Dumplings dish or the Hearty Chicken Pot Pie now that the weather is turning cooler. Stay tuned for my recipe attempts and photos.

GF Bisquick has not arrived in our area yet - VA. Pre-GF DX, I used to make Bisquick Coffee Cake often. It was tasty, quick and everybody gobbled it up. Let's hope the GF version is as yummy.

Will you post your experience with this product? I purchased it last week, used it in place of regular Bisquick in a recipe I have, and it was awful. Dry, crumbly, terrible enough to throw away. Followed recipe exactly, have made it pre-GF in the past, and all was fine, so I know the only difference is the GFBisquick. Checked the box for any pointers that might have said "add more liquid to traditional Bisquick recipes" or anything, and there is nothing, just recipes on the back, but no tips or any hints that it might perform differently.

I just checked the General Mills website and the first answer they have on their FAQ page states that you cannot simply substitute the GF Bisquick for regular. Here is their response:

Q.Can Bisquick Gluten Free be substituted in all Bisquick recipes?

No. The simple explanation is that the major ingredient in Bisquick is wheat flour and the major ingredient in Bisquick Gluten Free is rice flour. These two ingredients perform extremely different in recipes, thus a Bisquick recipe needs to be modified somewhat to work with Gluten Free Bisquick.

Here is some more information.

I didn't like the pancakes I made with this mix, but will try scones with the MyBlogSpark box and see how those turn out. Since I have to go to the health food store for many of my fave gf items, having this mix at the corner store isn't helpful if it isn't any good. However, I appreciate that the company is trying to offer more gf items. My guess is that if a lot of consumers agree that the product needs improving, it will be reformulated eventually.
